One day in 1964, while arguing with his grandmother, his rage got the best of him. He shot her with a rifle given to him by his grandfather. When Kemper's grandfather returned home, he shot him dead in the driveway for fear he would be in trouble.
After the double murder he called his mother and told her what he had done. Kemper's mother urged him to call police. She asked him why he had done this to his grandmother; his response was " I just wanted to see what it felt like to kill grandma". At 15 years old, he was committed to Atascaderd State Hospital. He was released within 5 years.
Edmund Kemper worked several jobs until he landed a job with the state of California in the public works division. Between 1972 and 1973 Kemper murdered six hitchhiking female students. His weapon of choice was either a knife, gun or his bare hands. He would then take their corpses back to his apartment for dismemberment. Kemper would have sex with the victims severed heads and dismembered bodies. Polaroid photographs were kept as souvenirs before the bodies were dumped in a ravine or gorge. The victims heads were buried in his mothers garden.
By 1973, Kemper had killed 8 more victims. His mother was part of his killing spree. Her body was treated to the same dismemberment and sexual molestation as his other victims. However, he went the extra mile with his mothers mutilated remains by throwing darts at them and removing her vocal chords and stuffing them in the garbage disposal, The total body count of the Kemper victims was 13 when he finally turned himself in.
Kemper was found guilty of 8 counts of murder in 1973. He requested the death penalty, something he always dreamed about, but was denied since capitol punishment was suspended in the state. He received life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Kemper still resides at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, California were he is part of the general population.
